How to Train Your Puppy to Ring a Bell to Be Let Out to go Potty
Bell training to be let out is such a neat idea. You can use either a call bell such as the one you see at business counters or a large jingle bell that you would tie to a string. Which ever you decide to use, stick with it. Below are the steps that you could use to teach your puppy to ring a bell to be let out. It is harder to teach an older dog since they will already have a potty routine.
See below for a specific list.

Step 1: Purchase a Bell
Call Bell – you would train your puppy to push/press down on the button with his/her paw.
Jingle Bell – you would train your puppy to hit the bell (that is attached to a string) with his/her paw.
Step 2: Place the Bell by or on the Door
You would place the call bell on the ground or the jingle on a hook by the door that would be used to go outside to go potty.
Step 3: Ring the Bell Every Time you Take Your Puppy Outside and Say “Potty”
Only do this when you are taking him/her out to go potty. Once they have gone potty, praise and bring them in for a treat and playtime. If you are taking them out to play do not ring the bell.
Step 4: Once outside, say “potty”
This will reinforce that you are going out to go potty and not play.
Step 5: Be consistent
Your dog will eventually pick up on the association that ringing the bell equals potty.
What to do if Your Puppy Rings the Bell and Wants to Play
If he/she rings the bell more than for just going potty, go outside, but if he/she does not go potty, come back in – do not play. It is important that your puppy knows that the bell is only for potty, not for play.
