Things To Think About When Puppy Proofing Your House

Get down at the puppy’s level and look around.  Basically anything they can get into they will.  You have just adopted a baby in dog form.  The best advise is to keep all doors (that includes cupboards, wash and dryers, toilets, all rooms) shut where puppy should not have access unless you are able to supervise him/her.  Especially bathroom doors!!

See below for a specific list.

This is not a complete list and Arizona Goldendoodles does not hold any legal liability, when in doubt please contact your Veterinarian.

What can he/she get into?

Move anything up and out of the way that you might not want chewed, accidently broken, or might be harmful to the puppy.

What can he/she jump on?

Make sure that if there is something to jump on, it will not help the puppy get into dangerous mischief.

What can he/she open or chew on?

Make sure all dangerous foods, plants, and cleaners are up and away in cupboards that can not be opened by your puppy.

Never assume he/she is okay.

If you want to assume, assume he/she will get into trouble – never assume they won’t investigate and/or touch something.  Keep eyes on them at all times.

Make sure he/she will be safe on a balcony.

If you have a balcony in your home, make sure that your puppy cannot fall.  If the space between the railings are small enough for your puppy to get through, add a temporary screen (either inexpensive chicken wire or a baby gate).

Make sure your Kitchen is safe.

Try to secure your cupboards at all times.  Place all cleaning supplies, detergents, and solvents in locked cupboards, or put them far out of puppy’s reach.  Make sure that your garbage has a lid that tighly closes or can be locked away so puppy can not get into it.  Be careful of what you keep on tables and counters – if the puppy can jump or push a chair to get it, they will.  When you are cooking, have your puppy stay out of the kitchen – rambunctious puppies can jump up and knock over pots and pans causing serious injury.

Make sure your Bathroom is safe.

Treat your bathroom like your kitchen, securely fasten or lock all cupboards.  Keep all cleaning supplies, detergents, and solvents out of puppies reach.  Place all soaps and shampoos in a shower caddy or on a high shelf so that your puppy cannot get to them.  Decorative soaps should be put away – if they smell good, your puppy will try to eat them.  Always, always, always keep your toilet seat down – not because they will drink out of it, because they could drown when they are trying to drink out of it.

Wires

Be sure that all electrical wires are hidden from view and/or not plugged in when not in use.  Even wires from appliances that are turned off but plugged in can be dangerous.

Doors

Remember puppies are always underfoot even when you don’t think they are anywhere close.  When you are walking through a doorway make sure you know where your puppy is.  You don’t want them to get loose and run away and closing doors can be dangerous even deadly if your puppy is in the doorway.
