Kitchen
• Child-Safety Locks
– lock on cabinets to prevent dogs from accessing whatever is inside.
• Put Away Sharp Knives,
– as curious puppies can pull them down.
• Get a Lidded Trash Can
– to keep puppy away from chicken bones, coffee grounds, plastic wrap and bags.
• Be Cautious Around the Oven Area;
– this includes turning off burners and keeping puppy away while cooking.
• Keep Dangerous Foods Out of Reach.
– The ASPCA recommends avoiding access to avocados, bread dough, chocolate, any types of alcohol, grapes, raisins, hops, macadamia nuts, onions, garlic, tobacco products, xylitol, and moldy foods.
• Close Off the Kitchen When Cleaning the Oven,
– as the chemicals can be harmful to your pet.
Living Room
• Plants Should be Kept Up High,
– as your dog gets accustomed to his/her new surrounding. Be sure to check warning labels so that you do not have a plant that could be poisonous or harmful to your puppy.
• Keep Blind Cords
– out of reach from puppy, as they can become strangled when playing with them.
• Fireplaces
– should always have a screen on them to avoid burns or access to ash. Puppies should never be left unattended with a fire or space heater.
• It Would be Best to Store Decorative Throws and Pillows in a Bin,
– as these can be chewed on and cause problems when digesting fabrics and pillow stuffing.
• An Outdoor Rug
– is recommended during puppy years, as it is more durable and a bit easier on the puppy’s teeth if he or she does attempt to chew it.
• Tuck Power Cords Away
– to avoid chewing. Use rugs, pvc piping, or other tools to steer clear of accessible areas.
Bedrooms
• Empty Pockets
– into a container that can only be accessed by a human, as a puppy can easily choke on loose change and other odds and ends.
• Jewelry Should Always Be Put Away or Stored High
– to avoid choking or metals that have toxic chemicals to the dog.
• Always Shut Drawers
– and put laundry out of reach. Swallowed clothing can cause intestinal blockage and choking hazards.
• Put Shoes
– up on a shelf behind closed closet doors.
• Provide Small Staircase or Bench
– for larger beds for puppy’s access. Ensure that there are barricades to prevent puppy from wedging him or herself beneath or behind furniture that could prove dangerous.
Bathroom
• Keep Hair Accessories Up High,
– dogs can easily choke on hair elastics, clips, bows, and more.
• Always Unplug and Put Cords Away,
– like a child, a puppy can get burned with any of your hair tools.
• Store Pills,
– soap, razors and cotton up high or locked away to avoid any access for the puppy.
• Keep
– trash can up high and put away.
• Always Keep Toilet Lid Down.
– Avoid auto-cleaners if possible, as they are harmful to pets.
• Drain
– sinks and bathtubs, as these are also drowning hazards.
• Lock Cabinets
