Steps to House Train My New Puppy

House Training a new puppy can be challenging but if you are consistent, patient, and give love and positive reinforcement it can be done with ease.  Make sure you have realistic expectations and you do not get discouraged or angry at your puppy – accidents will happen.

See below for a specific list.

This is not a complete list and Arizona Goldendoodles does not hold any legal liability, when in doubt please contact your Veterinarian.

Step 1:  Feeding Schedule

Keep your puppy on a regular feeding schedule.  Knowing when your puppy is eating will let you begin to sort of predict when he/she might need to go outside.

Step 2: Frequent Trips Outside

When you first get your puppy, it’s important to take him/her outside once every hour and encourage them to go potty.  They might do anything but knowing you will support them will help.

Take your puppy outside immediately after waking each morning.

Take your puppy outside after each meal and nap they have throughout the day.

Take your puppy outside before bedtime – always and make this a bedtime routine.

Step 3: Stay Outside Together

These should be short trips, they want to be by you so if you go in, they go in and who knows if they have gone to the bathroom or not.

Step 4: Same Spot

Always take your puppy to the same spot to eliminate when you’re at your home.  Carry your dog to that same spot, place him/her down, and encourage him/her to do their business.  They will associate that spot as being the proper place to go to the bathroom.

Step 5: Praise, Praise, Praise!

Praise him/her for going potty and offer a treat or play.

Step 6: Teach a Signal

Whether that means sitting by the door or ringing a bell at the door, it’s a great idea to teach your dog how to signal your attention that he/she needs to go outside.

Step 7: Crate Train

Crate training should be a positive experience for your puppy, but it also serves as a means of making sure they can’t get into trouble while you’re away.  Whether that’s at night when you’re asleep, or during the day when you’re at work or running errands.  Crate training is great and it should prevent accidents from happening, because dogs simply don’t want to eliminate near where they sleep.

What To Do When Accident Happen

Accidents will happen!!  If your puppy has an accident, don’t get upset.  Simply take him outside immediately (carrying him) and put him/her down in his usual spot and encourage him/her to go to the bathroom.  At the same time (if possible) while you are outside, have someone else clean up the mess so when you come back in with your puppy, the mess is gone and there is no lingering smells to suggest he/she should do it their again.  Never punish a puppy for having an accident.

When it comes to accidents, it’s important to remember to reinforce the good, and to just ignore the rest.
